Scientists Put Spotlight on Cannabinoid System To Understand Effects Of Cannabis

Among the 400 complex chemical entities of the cannabis plant, more than 60 are cannabinoid compounds, some of which induce opposing effects. Despite its many benefits to mental health, not everyone experiences it the same way. Research control groups in the past observed some participants experiencing transient psychotic symptoms and increased levels of anxiety, intoxication and sedation while others reported a reduction in subjective anxiety.

Clues to these inconsistent results may lie within the endocannabinoid receptor system, a network distributed both in the brain and in the peripheral system and most glands and organs in the body. Despite our limited knowledge, early research has already clued in on how the system interacts with cannabis’s two major compounds – THC and CBD.
