Betel nut chewing has significant cultural relevance in Guam and other parts of Micronesia. In an effort to raise awareness about the harmful effects of consuming this carcinogenic substance, scholars started looking towards social media to examine how betel or areca nut depictions are perceived.
Focusing primarily on Instagram, the study found that images uploaded depicted the betel palm tree, areca nut, and quid ingredients as opposed to the actual use or chewing of the betel nut. Comparisons have been drawn with marijuana product depictions and may give an indication of wide social acceptance amongst youths and young adults.
