Various studies on psilocybin have pointed it as a potential treatment for mental health disorders. The chemical found in more than 100 species of mushrooms is commonly used recreationally as a hallucinogen. But early research has noted positive results for users suffering from certain mental health disease states and symptoms such as depression, anxiety disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorder, alcohol use disorder, and tobacco use disorder.
Based on a survey conducted in 2008, control groups who were administered psilocybin reported lowered tendencies of suicidal thoughts and improvement in mood, positive attitudes and social interactions after a 2 month and 14 month follow-up session.
